Life has come full circle for Nitish Kumar Reddy, one of India’s most promising young all-rounders. His international story began in Perth, where he was handed a surprise debut in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test. Now, the 23-year-old returns to the same venue — Optus Stadium — on the brink of making his ODI debut for India.
Reddy first made headlines in that memorable Test, scoring a crucial 41-run knock in the first innings that set up India’s victory after a 201-run opening stand. He went on to feature in all five Tests of the series, including a gritty century at the MCG, proving his potential as a dependable all-rounder.
According to RV Prasad, Andhra’s chief selector, Reddy’s inclusion is about maintaining team balance.
“He was picked as an all-rounder and should be part of the XI, especially with Hardik Pandya unavailable,” said Prasad. “He brings both depth and versatility to the lineup.”
Since that breakout series, Reddy has played limited red-ball cricket — just four more Tests, including two against the West Indies and two in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England. His progress was briefly halted by a knee injury sustained during training, but he recovered fully after rehab at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.
Despite personal challenges — including his father’s knee surgery — Reddy remained committed to his recovery and training. His dedication paid off when he pulled off a stunning catch in Ahmedabad to dismiss Tagenarine Chanderpaul, proving his fitness and fielding prowess.
Reddy has since improved his diet, discipline, and fitness, ranking among the top Indian players in Yo-Yo and Bronco tests. Head coach Gautam Gambhir praised his growth and believes Reddy should gain more experience across formats.
“We need to groom him properly,” Gambhir said. “India has long searched for genuine seam-bowling all-rounders. Nitish has the skill and temperament to fill that gap.”
If Reddy continues on this path, India may finally have found their next multi-format seam-bowling all-rounder, following in the footsteps of Hardik Pandya. His return to Perth marks not just a milestone — but the possible beginning of a new era in Indian cricket.
