The Indian senior women’s football team is set to participate in a Tri-Nation International Friendly Series in Shillong, taking on IR Iran and Nepal as part of their preparations for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026. The matches are scheduled during the October FIFA Women’s International Match Window, with India facing IR Iran on October 21, 2025, followed by a clash against Nepal on October 27, 2025. IR Iran and Nepal will also play against each other on October 24, 2025. The fixtures will be hosted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong, starting at 18:00 IST. India, ranked 63rd globally, aims to test its squad, strategies, and tactical flexibility against international opposition to fine-tune preparations for the upcoming continental tournament. The series also provides a crucial opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate players under competitive match conditions, assess combinations, and experiment with formations. These friendlies are particularly significant as they mark India’s first international matches since qualifying for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026, highlighting the team’s progress and potential. IR Iran, ranked 70th, has also secured qualification for the Asian Cup, while Nepal, ranked 89th, narrowly missed out after a penalty shootout defeat to Uzbekistan. The Shillong venue has historical significance, having hosted the Indian women’s team previously during the 2016 South Asian Games, where India won the gold medal. This Tri-Nation Series will provide players with exposure to different playing styles, tactical challenges, and the experience of international competition. The coaching team plans to use these matches to evaluate defensive solidity, midfield creativity, attacking patterns, and set-piece effectiveness. Beyond the tactical and technical aspects, the series will help strengthen team cohesion, communication, and adaptability under competitive pressure. The experience gained from these friendlies is expected to contribute significantly to the team’s readiness, confidence, and competitive edge heading into the Asian Cup. This initiative reflects AIFF’s commitment to supporting women’s football development, improving international performance, and nurturing talent at the senior level while providing aspiring players with role models to emulate. The friendly series also serves as an engagement platform for football fans, fostering community support and awareness of women’s football in India.
