Ishan Kishan displayed maturity and composure as he rescued Jharkhand with an unbeaten 125 against Tamil Nadu in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy. Batting at No. 5, Kishan guided his team from a precarious 79 for 3 to finish day one at 307 for 6, sharing an unbroken 150-run partnership with Sahil Raj. This innings marked his ninth first-class century and demonstrated his strategic approach on a tricky greenish pitch in Coimbatore.
Kishan admitted that the key to his success was understanding the situation rather than chasing personal milestones. “At this stage, I need to be very smart. You have to understand the importance of the Ranji Trophy and the impact of your innings against strong teams,” he told The Indian Express. His disciplined approach saw him hit just two sixes, prioritizing singles and partnerships over big shots.
The Jharkhand captain reflected on his past experiences and how they shaped his mindset. “Whenever I go in with a target, I just do very badly. This season, I am focusing on staying at the crease and letting runs come naturally,” he explained. Kishan’s patience and cricketing intelligence allowed him to wear down the opposition bowlers and anchor his team’s innings effectively.
Kishan came into the season after a brief stint with Nottinghamshire in county cricket, where he impressed with scores of 77 and 87. He was also in contention for a cover role in India’s fifth Test against England but missed out due to a minor e-bike accident. Fully recovered, he represented Rest of India in the Irani Cup before leading Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy.
Kishan’s pragmatic approach and focus on partnerships highlight his evolution as a cricketer, balancing aggression with strategy to lead Jharkhand successfully in the domestic season.
