Mohammed Shami: “If I’m Fit for Ranji Trophy, I Can Play ODIs Too”

India’s veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami has dismissed any doubts regarding his fitness, saying that his participation in the Ranji Trophy itself proves he’s match-ready. Speaking ahead of Bengal’s opening fixture in the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season, Shami stated that if he is capable of playing four-day cricket, he is equally prepared for 50-over matches.

Shami, who last represented India during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, was not included in the squad for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia later this month. Reacting to his omission, he told PTI,

“Selection is not in my hands. If there’s a fitness issue, I shouldn’t be here playing for Bengal. If I can play four-day cricket, I can also play 50-over cricket.”

The 35-year-old pacer, who has battled ankle and knee injuries in recent years, emphasized that it’s not his responsibility to provide updates about his fitness.

“It’s my job to train at the NCA (National Cricket Academy) and perform in matches. Giving updates is not my responsibility — my performance should speak for itself,” he added.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had earlier explained Shami’s exclusion, citing his lack of first-class cricket in the past few years. However, Shami remains determined to return to the national side, having recently bowled 30 overs during the IPL 2025 and participated in the Duleep Trophy for East Zone.

“I believe in staying ready. If the selectors call, I’m prepared. Until then, I’ll continue to play for Bengal and keep improving,” Shami said.
He further highlighted the importance of domestic cricket, urging younger players to value the Ranji Trophy as a crucial platform for skill development.
“Earlier, playing Ranji was a big deal. Nowadays, players treat it as a step down, but I don’t agree. You must play four-day cricket to stay sharp.”

Despite his absence from international cricket, Shami remains hopeful of wearing the India jersey again, maintaining his reputation as one of India’s most consistent pacers since his debut in 2013.
