Rishad Hossain’s Six-Wicket Haul Powers Bangladesh to 1-0 Lead Over West Indies

Bangladesh secured a commanding 74-run victory over West Indies in the opening ODI of the series in Dhaka, posting 207/7 (Hridoy 51, Mahidul 46) and restricting the visitors to 133 all out (King 44, Athanaze 27, Rishad 6-35).

Rishad Hossain was the standout performer, claiming an extraordinary 6 for 35, including the first five wickets of the West Indies innings, on a challenging dark Dhaka pitch. This performance made him only the second leg-spinner in ODI history to take the first five wickets in an innings, after Sri Lanka’s Jeffrey Vandersay. Rishad also became the first Bangladeshi leg-spinner to achieve a five-wicket haul in ODIs.

West Indies had a promising start with openers Brandon King and Alick Athanaze putting on a 51-run partnership. King struck an early six off Taskin Ahmed, while Athanaze hit three fours and a six off Tanvir Islam. However, Bangladesh’s bowling attack slowed the scoring after the fifth over, with Rishad breaking the partnership by dismissing Athanaze LBW in the 12th over.

Rishad continued his destructive spell, removing Keacy Carty, King, Sherfane Rutherford, and Roston Chase, supported by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanvir Islam, who picked up crucial wickets. Mustafizur Rahman also contributed by dismissing Romario Shepherd and Justin Greaves. Rishad sealed the win with Jayden Seales’ wicket, giving Mehidy his second ODI win as captain.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s innings saw early wickets fall, but Towhid Hridoy (51) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (32) steadied the innings with a 71-run partnership. Mehidy and Mahidul Islam, on his ODI debut, added valuable runs, with Mahidul scoring 46 off 76 balls. Rishad’s quick 26 off 16 balls, including two sixes, helped push Bangladesh past 200.

This victory puts Bangladesh in a strong position, taking a 1-0 lead in the West Indies tour of Bangladesh 2025 series, and highlights Rishad Hossain’s exceptional all-round performance.
