Former India captain Rohit Sharma, now 38, has entered the twilight phase of his international career. With Shubman Gill taking over the leadership duties, Rohit is currently focusing solely on his batting. However, discussions about his future and potential participation in the 2027 ICC World Cup continue to make headlines.
Cricketer and commentator Dinesh Karthik, who has shared the dressing room with Rohit for years, believes the veteran opener still has what it takes to feature in the next World Cup — provided he remains motivated and committed.
“Ever since he lost the 2023 World Cup final, Rohit’s dream has been to lead a team that wins a World Cup — something he achieved in 2024 in the Caribbean,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz. “That fire still burns within him. If Rohit puts his heart and mind into it, there’s no reason he can’t play in 2027.”
Karthik pointed out that Rohit Sharma’s consistency since the 2023 World Cup has been remarkable, with over 1,000 runs at an average close to 48. He emphasized that Rohit remains one of India’s most impactful batters in the Powerplay, often setting the tone for the innings with fearless strokeplay.
“When Rohit is in rhythm, he’s pure poetry in motion,” Karthik added. “He no longer plays for records — he plays to give the team momentum. That intent was clear in the World Cup final when he gave India a strong start.”
The 2027 World Cup, set to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, is still two years away, but for fans and experts alike, Rohit’s continued form and fitness could determine whether he remains a part of India’s ODI plans.
