Shubman Gill Proud to Lead Indian Cricket Legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in Australia

Perth, October 18, 2025 — As Shubman Gill prepared for his first ODI as India’s full-time captain, the 26-year-old exuded calm and confidence in front of the press at Perth’s scenic Swan River backdrop. Though not yet as globally recognizable as Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma, Gill is quickly becoming the new face of Indian cricket — and now leads both icons on the field.

The India vs Australia ODI series marks the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket as the team transitions toward the 2027 Cricket World Cup. For Gill, captaining the same players he once idolized is nothing short of a dream come true.

“It’s a big honour for me to lead such legends of the game,” said Gill. “These are the players I grew up watching. I’ll continue to learn from them whenever I can, especially during tough situations.”

Smooth Transition of Leadership

Even with Rohit Sharma still part of the playing XI after stepping down from captaincy, Gill dismissed any talk of tension or power shift within the team.

“The outside narrative is very different,” Gill explained. “Nothing has changed between us. Rohit bhai has been very supportive, and I always seek advice from him whenever I need it. The same goes for Virat bhai — they’ve both helped me grow as a player and as a leader.”

Gill emphasized that collaboration and open communication are key to his captaincy style, saying he values input from both senior players to make better tactical decisions.

Gill’s Leadership Style: Calm, Confident, and Player-Centric

The ODI series in Australia will provide the first clear picture of Gill’s captaincy approach and team composition. His tenure as India’s Test captain has already shown impressive results — five centuries in just 13 innings — proving that he thrives under responsibility.

“I actually enjoy the extra responsibility,” Gill said. “It brings out my best. But when I’m batting, I prefer to think purely as a batsman — not as a captain. That helps me make clearer decisions for the team.”

With a stellar ODI average of nearly 60 in 55 matches, Gill has established himself as one of the world’s most consistent young batters. His ability to balance leadership and performance could be crucial as India aims for stability and success in the post-Rohit-Kohli era.

Stepping Into Big Shoes

While much of the spotlight in this India tour of Australia 2025 will be on Kohli and Rohit — who may be playing their final matches Down Under — Gill is emerging as the torchbearer of India’s next generation.

“It’s definitely very exciting,” he said. “It’s a huge responsibility to carry forward the legacy left by Virat bhai and Rohit bhai. I want to be a captain who makes every player feel secure and motivated to perform their best.”

As India prepares to face Australia in the ODI series opener at Optus Stadium, Shubman Gill is set to lead with calm authority — embodying both the inspiration of his heroes and the promise of a new era for Indian cricket.
